He recounts how post-war conditions in Germany led to his father's separation from his family. Nevertheless, Grossmann highlights his father's determination to reconnect with his relatives in Germany, culminating in their inaugural visit in 1972, followed by another in 1978. He notes that since that time, he has maintained a continuous relationship with his cousins residing in Germany, who have also visited South Africa.

Grossmann states that he had a single sibling, his late brother. He describes their childhood in Hillcrest, Everton, before moving to a farm where he spent the majority of his formative years. In terms of his academic background, he attended Hillcrest Primary School and Durban High School, and after completing his matriculation, he obtained a diploma in land surveying from Technikon Natal. Upon finishing his education, he was called to serve in the army. He reflects on how boys were generally aware from a young age that they would be drafted into military service after their studies. While they were not given much information, they were aware that the Border War was occurring in Communist regions, including Cuba and East Germany, which was particularly relevant to him as he held a German passport and had family in Germany. He emphasizes the considerable role of religion in the National Party and the military, noting that they attended church three times a week, participating in what he refers to as a National Party Christian war, thereby being integrated into the system.

Grossmann articulates that significant transformations occurred in the country following 1994. He reflects on his journey from his academic pursuits to his military service, during which he was employed by the Natal Provincial Administration Roads Department. Upon returning to the army, he took on the role of a land surveyor during the construction of the N2 freeway. Subsequently, he made the decision to work for the land surveying department at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Howard College. He recounts that he was responsible for overseeing the practical work of all students. By the conclusion of his tenure at UKZN in 2014, he had been
to the 3D laser scanner and recognized its potential applications in heritage preservation. He notes that his time at UKZN provided him with access to cutting-edge software and instruments. After dedicating 20 years to UKZN, Grossmann transitioned to a full-time position as the chairman of the African Conservation Trust.

Grossmann explains that as a newly established NGO, they faced challenges in securing substantial funding due to their lack of a proven track record. Consequently, their initial two projects were conducted on a volunteer basis, taking place in Malawi and Botswana. In terms of local initiatives, ACT has collaborated closely with public organizations such as the KwaZulu-Natal Museum, AMAFA, and Kruger National Park on various heritage preservation efforts. For instance, Grossmann recounts a two-year project with the Natal Museum that focused on mapping San rock art in the Drakensberg and developing a three-dimensional representation of each site. Before this initiative, only physical maps were available; ACT transformed these original documents into a digital database, incorporating modern coordinates, digital photographs, and site location images. As a result of this project, ACT expanded the rock art database by 10-15%, discovering 80 previously unrecorded sites.

In his guidance to heritage authorities, Grossmann emphasizes the crucial role of funding, whether it pertains to non-governmental organizations or governmental departments, as no progress can be made without financial resources. He advocates for the necessity of funding to facilitate the completion of projects, highlighting that once records are digitized, they must be properly archived and made publicly accessible. Grossmann points out that we exist in a digital era, necessitating the conversion of paper records into electronic formats for easier public access. Furthermore, he underscores the importance of educating the public regarding the availability and significance of these records. He believes it would be advantageous to incorporate information about built environments, sites, and archaeological locations into school curricula, as there is much knowledge that the public should acquire.

Date
2023-05-15
Specific Location
Assagay, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Extended Locations
Assagay - eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality - KwaZulu-Natal - South Africa
Duration
01:32:13
Contributors
Carl Grossmann (Interviewee)","Muziwandile Hadebe (Interviewer)","Reinhardt Hartzenberg (Field Technician)
Interviewee Information
Carl Grossmann (Name)","1966-03-15 (Date of Birth)","Durban (Location of Birth)","English (Ethnicity)","Male (Gender)
Provider
KwaZulu-Natal Department Sport Arts and Culture - KwaZulu-Natal Archives and Records Service - Oral History Unit
Repository
Audio-Visual Repository
Language
English (Primary)","IsiZulu (Secondary)
Preferred Citation

(Reference code) KwaZulu-Natal Department Sport, Arts and Culture - KwaZulu-Natal Archives and Records Service; Oral History Unit

Source URL
https://www.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/91657
Access Restrictions
This material is open for public access and research
Format
MPEG-4 (Base Media / Version 2) - extension: .mp4 - ISO/IEC 14496-14 -Video Compression Standard: HEVC (H265) - Frames: 25fps - 16:9 - 8-bit - Compression Mode: Lossy - 854x480 pixels (Public Access - Format)","AVCHD - extension: .MPT - Frame rate: 25fps - 16:9 - Compression Mode: Lossy - 1920 x 1080 pixels (Original Media - Format)","ProRes422 - extension: .MOV - Frame rate: 25fps - 16:9 - 8-bit - Compression Mode: Lossy - 1920 x 1080 pixels (Video Archive Version - Format)
Primary Media Type
Video
Medium
Born digital (digitally generated content)
Themes
Military Veterans","Family Histories","Historical Sites
Subject
Experiences of Military Veterans","Family Tree","Technological Advancements and Impact
Genre
Oral Histories
Conditions governing access

Collection is open for research.

Condition governing reproduction
COPIES FOR PRIVATE STUDY: Subject to copyright, conditions imposed by owners and protecting the documents, digital copies can be made. Although he has access to family records, he is unable to ascertain the reasons for their migration to South Africa, nor whether they travelled together or met there. On the paternal side, he shares that his father was from Germany. He explains that his father was conscripted into the German Army at the age of 16. In 1942, during a period fraught with challenges as the war drew to a close, his father engaged in black market dealings in France but was eventually caught and sentenced. When faced with the choice of serving in French Indo-China or enduring his prison sentence, he chose to remain incarcerated, having had enough of the war.

While imprisoned, he developed bricklaying skills. At one point, a French Commander informed him that the British were in search of skilled workers for the British War Department. He applied for the position and was sent to Libya to participate in the reconstruction of North Africa, which had experienced considerable disruption due to the war, where he worked until 1955. Grossmann elaborates that one night, his father and a friend went rabbit hunting in the desert, where they stumbled upon two cars. They sold one of the vehicles and decided to embark on a journey to Africa with the other. Their travels took them through Southern Sudan, Ethiopia, and Northern Kenya, eventually reaching East Africa. They continued into Congo and Zambia, which was then known as Northern Rhodesia, before making their way to South Africa in search of job opportunities. He further explains that his father arrived in Durban, where he met his mother, leading to their marriage in 1957. He describes this non-profit environmental organization as a means to integrate his expertise in land surveying with the heritage sector. He notes that two of the original trustees have since relocated to Canada, leading to the inclusion of new members such as Nomfundo Phewa and Sibulele Ngwenya, who specialize in archaeology and agriculture. Grossmann reflects on his childhood, expressing a longstanding passion for outdoor activities, nature, and hiking. He emphasizes that the organization’s focus extends beyond wildlife and vegetation to encompass heritage and human connections, as people are intrinsically linked to the land, animals, and the natural environment.
["Synopsis
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/91657/file/187767#t=2125.0,4367.0
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/91657/file/187767/index/88222/annotation/21
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/91657/file/187767#t=2125.0,4367.0
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/91657/file/187767/index/88222/annotation/22
["Title
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/91657/file/187767#t=4368.0,5468.0
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/91657/file/187767/index/88222/annotation/23
Grossmann articulates that ACT has utilized 3D scanning technology alongside aerial photography to effectively scan notable battlefields such as Spioenkop and Isandlwana. The organization aims to broaden its scope to include further battlefields, particularly those associated with the Anglo-Zulu War and other less prominent battles. He emphasizes the opportunity for developing 3D models of all war sites, which will be made available in a digital format, thus serving as a valuable resource for tourism.
["Synopsis
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/91657/file/187767#t=4368.0,5468.0
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/91657/file/187767/index/88222/annotation/24
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/91657/file/187767#t=4368.0,5468.0
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/91657/file/187767/index/88222/annotation/25
["Title
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/91657/file/187767#t=5469.0,5533.0
["Media File 2 of 2 - 2023_05_15_Carl_Grossmann_Audio_80Kbps.mp3
https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/collection_resource_files/thumbnails/000/187/766/small/Audio_logo_1000px.png?1684171460
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/91657/file/187766/content/2/annotation/1
https://aviary-p-kzndsac.s3.wasabisys.com/collection_resource_files/resource_files/000/187/766/original/2023_05_15_Carl_Grossmann_Audio_80Kbps.mp3?1684170663
