A boat with marines had capsized 500 metres from the shore and three men were missing. Lt Bouwer and two sailors were sent by boat to try to find them. They also capsized and were washed toward a rugged cliff. They left the boat in the stormy sea and swam towards land, but were dashed against the face of the cliff. Eventually Bouwer and a sailor managed to cling to the rocks and pull themselves beyond reach of the waves. He then saw that the other sailor still in the sea was exhausted and being pulled out to sea by the current. Despite his own fatigue, having spent an hour in the water, Bouwer dived in and swam a kilometre to reach the drowning man. Both were covered with blood from rock and barnacle scratches and Bouwer feared that sharks would be attracted. He managed to swim ashore with the man, but they were again dashed against rocks. Fortunately this lime the other survivor seized hold of them and helped them ashore. After having spent another 45 minutes in the stormy sea both vomited seawater. Bouwer then treated all their cuts and wounds. The rescue was made in full view of a number of officers who were impressed by the fact that Bouwer was prepared to risk his life to save that of another serviceman. Dr Bouwer later specialised in head and neck injuries. His interest in military matters is shown by his collection of tank and aircraft models.
