Jakeni explains that her name symbolizes discipline and humility. She clarifies that her sister, Sivakele, has a disability, and doctors advise against sending her to a special school as it may worsen her condition; instead, the family was told to treat her like any other. Jakeni says that despite her sister having a disability, she is the one who helped shape her into the woman she is today by teaching her cooking, cleaning, and childcare. Unknowingly, Jakeni explains that there were three people who were sent to her life by her maternal grandmother in order for her to recognise her gift. Jakeni tells that a lady that she didn’t know came to her workplace, and advised her to read exodus in a bible in order to understand what was happening in her life. She adds that a lady informed her that there is something covered in her life that needs to be uncovered, and she suggested that she should ask her parents about it. Jakeni explains that when she asked her parents, her mother recalls that Jakeni’s grandfather died with Jakeni in her hands as she was a sickly and crying infant. Her mother explains that the grandfather was the only person who could calm her, and according to her it the grandfathers coat that needs to be uncovered. The second incident was when her colleague informed her that a gentleman called Mr. Hadebe has requested her sick friend to come and see him but she refused, and accidentally Jakeni ended up at Mr. Hadebe’s yard, where he informed her that her grandmother requests iladi ceremony, she mentions that after stepping into the Hadebe yard she felt better. She explains that Hadebe said her grandmother has instructed him to cleanse her. Jakeni went on to clarify that the third individual sent by her grandmother was a woman from their village, she further explained the circumstances that led to her arrival at her residence, and started the initiation process. She remembers that from the start, the initiator told her that she is the one responsible for choosing the river where she will be cleansed. She clarifies that her initiation process was unique because she was allowed to return home during the day, she already had a name, and knew the type of healing she would practice after completing initiation. Jakeni elaborates that she did not need to adjust to the initiation diet as her ancestors had already guided her to stop eating eggs, milk, and wearing trousers. She describes that the time arrived for her to indicate the river, but her ancestors have not given her any guidance. She clarifies that Ta’Mkhulu pointed out a different river, saying it wasn't the one they were looking at, and led them to another river that held importance for their family. She was indeed cleansed, and the ritual was highly successful. Jakeni discusses the challenge of informing her children about her initiation, revealing that her eldest son had trouble accepting it. However, her daughter sibahle expressed support, stating "mom, if this will help you get better and stop getting sick, please go ahead." She describes it as the most devastating moment because she believed she let her children down, and they have been suffering since their father abandoned them, and now their mother had to be away for initiation.

Date
2022-09-23
Specific Location
Killie Campbell Africana Library
Extended Locations
Durban - eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality - KwaZulu-Natal - South Africa
Duration
03:09:41
Contributors
Luleka Jakeni (Interviewee)","Muziwandile Hadebe (Interviewer)","Reinhardt Hartzenberg (field technician)
Interviewee Information
Luleka Jakeni (Name)","1986-04-22 (Date of Birth)","Durban-Magabheni (Location of Birth)","Xhosa (Ethnicity)","Female (Gender)","Senior Museologist (Occupation)
Provider
KwaZulu-Natal Department Sport Arts and Culture - KwaZulu-Natal Archives and Records Service - Oral History Unit
Repository
Audio-Visual Repository
Language
Xhosa (Primary)","English (Secondary)","IsiZulu (Other)
Preferred Citation

(Reference code) KwaZulu-Natal Department Sport, Arts and Culture - KwaZulu-Natal Archives and Records Service; Oral History Unit

Source URL
https://www.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/99960
Access Restrictions
This material is open for public access and research
Embargo Date
N/A
Format
MPEG-4 (Base Media / Version 2) - extension: .mp4 - ISO/IEC 14496-14 -Video Compression Standard: HEVC (H265) - Frames: 25fps - 16:9 - 8-bit - Compression Mode: Lossy - 854x480 pixels (Public Access - Format)","AVCHD - extension: .MPT - Frame rate: 25fps - 16:9 - Compression Mode: Lossy - 1920 x 1080 pixels (Original Media - Format)","ProRes422 - extension: .MOV - Frame rate: 25fps - 16:9 - 8-bit - Compression Mode: Lossy - 1920 x 1080 pixels (Video Archive Version - Format)
Primary Media Type
Video
Conditions governing access

Collection is open for research.

Condition governing reproduction
COPIES FOR PRIVATE STUDY: Subject to copyright, conditions imposed by owners and protecting the documents, digital copies can be made. She mentioned that a woman told her there is a hidden aspect of her life that needs to be revealed, and advised her to speak with her parents about it. Her mother remembers that Jakeni's grandfather passed away while holding Jakeni, as she was a sickly and crying infant. Her mother says the only person who could soothe Jakeni was her grandfather, and she believes it is the grandfather's coat that needs to be uncovered. The next incident occurred when her co-worker relayed that Mr. Hadebe had asked her ill friend to visit him, leading Jakeni to accidentally visit Mr. Hadebe's residence. There, he mentioned her grandmother had requested an iladi ceremony, and she expressed that her health improved after entering the yard. She clarifies that Hadebe mentioned that her grandmother has directed him to cleanse her, and he provided her with the date for that ritual.

She recounts seeing an elderly woman in her dreams, who was walking barefoot in the cold. She felt compassion for her and decided to purchase socks to keep her warm, but realized the old woman had extremely large feet. As usual, she told her mother about the dream, and her mother revealed that the woman she saw was her deceased grandmother on her mother's side. Jakeni shares that her grandmother used to visit her often, and one day she asked her to forgive the father of her children, but she declined. She recounts how her grandmother provided justification for forgiving him, and elaborated that the destination they were heading towards didn't call for hatred. She emphasized that what she possesses is not a present, but a duty. She mentions that Hadebe purified her in a waterfall, which had a beneficial effect on her life and caused her not to feel hungry for three days. Jakeni elaborates that her grandmother's suggestion of the iladi ceremony caused her parents to hold differing opinions, with her mother disapproving while her father was in favour. She mentions that following the grandmother's directions, the ceremony was supposed to be led by a distant uncle living in koQumbu, which also didn't please her nearby uncle, causing him to be excluded from the event. She notes that in spite of everything, the event was a huge triumph and she felt improved afterwards.
["Synopsis
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/99960/file/198159#t=510.0,7037.0
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/99960/file/198159/index/85615/annotation/9
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
["Keywords
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/99960/file/198159#t=510.0,7037.0
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/99960/file/198159/index/85615/annotation/10
["Title
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/99960/file/198159#t=7038.0,10951.0
https://av.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/99960/file/198159/index/85615/annotation/11
Jakeni went on to clarify that the third individual sent by her grandmother was a woman from their village, she further explained the circumstances that led to her arrival at her residence, and started the initiation process.
