In 1989, he decided to devote his entire life to art and began painting. Self-taught, he attempted to sell his artwork on the Durban coastline. He struggled to make a living until 1990, when a friend suggested him to exhibit his work at the African Art Centre, then located in Durban's Guildford Arcade. This was a significant turning point, and institutions and collectors instantly took notice. In 1996, Standard Bank granted him the Young Artist's Award for Visual Art.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eMakhoba's work is noted for its satirical and social realism elements, reflecting contemporary events in his home region.
