The interview was conducted at 12h00pm on Thursday, 24 October 2017. Mr. Mkhize grew up in Willowfountein alongside his siblings. During the interview Mr. Mkhize gave a brief background of an area that it was under Mkhize Clan. The arrival of Mr. D.T Hall meant he took over the land and started his farming and rented some part of the land to other farmers like Mrs. Anderson. Mr. Mkhize alludes to the fact that one had to leave school for six months to work the farm before proceeding with school or before one can look for another job in town. He stresses the importance of a working permit that one needed to work in town. Without a work permit one wasn’t allowed to work in town otherwise you would be detained. Early 1980s, G.G allocated land back to the community, which meant the farmers had to leave. People from other areas like Tembeni, Elandskorp came to live in Willowfountein. Mr. Mkhize speaks about the problem it brought, livestock theft rose and people started to execute those suspected of criminal activities and witchcraft without substantial evidence. Lastly, he spoke about the importance of tolerance, substance farming amongst youth.

Date
2017-10-24
Duration
00:53:29
Language
Zulu (Primary)
Preferred Citation

(Reference code) KwaZulu-Natal Department Sport, Arts and Culture - KwaZulu-Natal Archives and Records Service; Oral History Unit

Source URL
https://www.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2268/collection_resources/89766
Access Restrictions
This material is open for public access and research
Embargo Date
N/A
Primary Media Type
Video
Conditions governing access

Collection is open for research.

Condition governing reproduction
COPIES FOR PRIVATE STUDY: Subject to copyright, conditions imposed by owners and protecting the documents, digital copies can be made.
