In 1973, she welcomed Thembeka into the world, and in 1974, she gave birth to Nomathemba who tragically passed away at 2 years old due to flu. She also mentions that in 1977, she was blessed with Zamekile, also called Mapoto. Nyawose reveals that in 2021, her daughter Thembeka missed her father's funeral due to being in initiation. She describes how challenging her daughter's initiation process was, mentioning that as a single-parent she had no one to help with the expenses. She goes on to explain that a cow is typically needed for a graduation ceremony/ukuphothula, but as she only receives a government grant, she couldn't afford one, so she purchased a goat instead. Nyawose clarifies that she is concerned because her daughter has been mistreated by certain family members, citing their small family size as a reason for unity, but she is displeased with her daughter's treatment.

Date
2022-10-14
Specific Location
Amandawe-Scottburgh
Duration
01:06:22
Contributors
Betty Ntombilezi Nyawose (Interviewee)","Muziwandile Hadebe (Interviewer)","Reinhardt Hartzenberg (field technician)
Interviewee Information
Betty Ntombilezi Nyawose (Name)","1946-04-11 (Date of Birth)","Amandawe (Location of Birth)","Zulu (Ethnicity)","Female (Gender)","- (Occupation)
Provider
KwaZulu-Natal Department Sport Arts and Culture - KwaZulu-Natal Archives and Records Service - Oral History Unit
Repository
Audio-Visual Repository
Language
IsiZulu (Primary)
Preferred Citation

(Reference code) KwaZulu-Natal Department Sport, Arts and Culture - KwaZulu-Natal Archives and Records Service; Oral History Unit

Source URL
https://www.kznarchives.gov.za/collections/2203/collection_resources/100599
Access Restrictions
This material is open for public access and research
Embargo Date
N/A
Format
MPEG-4 (Base Media / Version 2) - extension: .mp4 - ISO/IEC 14496-14 -Video Compression Standard: HEVC (H265) - Frames: 25fps - 16:9 - 8-bit - Compression Mode: Lossy - 854x480 pixels (Public Access - Format)","AVCHD - extension: .MPT - Frame rate: 25fps - 16:9 - Compression Mode: Lossy - 1920 x 1080 pixels (Original Media - Format)","ProRes422 - extension: .MOV - Frame rate: 25fps - 16:9 - 8-bit - Compression Mode: Lossy - 1920 x 1080 pixels (Video Archive Version - Format)
Primary Media Type
Video
Medium
Born digital (digitally generated content)
Themes
Family Tree
Subject
Family Tree
Genre
Oral Histories
Conditions governing access

Collection is open for research.

Condition governing reproduction
COPIES FOR PRIVATE STUDY: Subject to copyright, conditions imposed by owners and protecting the documents, digital copies can be made.
